Food intolerant?

You're filling up on healthy foods, but the weight's not coming off.

The solution: The Novo programme from Immogenics

How it works: According to Immogenics, even a salad could hinder your diet - if you happen to be intolerant to lettuce, that is. They reckon the main cause of obesity is not over-eating, but long-term, low-level inflammation caused by food. 'Bad' foods are not broken down properly and treated as invaders by your body, which responds to the threat by becoming inflamed. This hits your immune system, causing low energy and weight gain.

Everybody's digestive system is unique, so different foods will trigger inflammation in different people, but it's impossible to work out for yourself which foods are making you fat as the immediate symptoms of inflammation are so subtle.

What do I have to do? Have a blood test to find your inflammatory triggers - visit a Novo centre, arrange a home nurse visit or ask your GP to take a sample to send off to the company. Immogenics will provide a list of foods that agree and disagree with your body, plus a personalised advice pack. You don't have to eliminate whole food groups and there's no calorie-counting - you simply cut out the foods that produce inflammation. Booze is out for everyone for five weeks.

Cost: Testing costs £350, but Immogenics points out it provides a personalised food blueprint for the rest of your life.
